The VSCA SportsCar Championship heads to Watkins Glen on Saturday for the Abruzzi Six Hours of the Glen, Round 8 of the 2026 season and Round 3 of the five-race Endurance Cup. The 3.40-mile, 11-turn circuit has been a fixture of the championship calendar since the inaugural 2022 season, making this the fifth consecutive visit to one of North America's most recognizable sports car venues.
Watkins Glen's history stretches back to the 1940s and has long been intertwined with endurance racing. This year's event carries additional significance as teams enter the second half of the SportsCar Championship season with several title battles still very much undecided.
Sponsored by Abruzzi Racewear USA, the six-hour contest will begin at 1600 GMT, corresponding to 10:45 a.m. in-sim time. Endurance Cup points will be awarded both at the three-hour mark and at the checkered flag, adding another strategic layer to the weekend.
GTP Championship Fight Tightens at the Top
The spotlight in GTP falls on Wastegate Racing and its championship-leading #32 Ferrari 499P. The team arrives at Watkins Glen carrying significant momentum after earning its first-ever SportsCar Championship points-paying victory at CTMP, a result that elevated the Ferrari to the top of the standings.
The advantage remains slim. The #25 Tri-State Racing BMW trails by only 15 points, while the #96 Albrecht Motorsports Cadillac sits just 25 points behind. With four races remaining after Watkins Glen, every point gained at the three-hour mark and at the finish could prove decisive.
One of the biggest questions entering the weekend surrounds the defending series champions. The #51 World Of SimRacing Team Cadillac won last year's Six Hours of the Glen, but the team endured a disastrous CTMP outing, finishing eight laps down and falling from first to fourth in the championship standings. Watkins Glen offers an immediate opportunity for recovery at a circuit where the team has already proven it can win.
A new face is also expected to join the GTP grid. O'Connell Simsports are anticipated to finally make their SportsCar Championship debut with the #34 Cadillac V-Series.R GTP after months of anticipation.
LMP2 Grid Sees New Arrivals and a Shrinking Points Gap
LMP2 enters Watkins Glen with one of the most intriguing championship stories in the paddock. Championship leader Ric Team Racing has seen its once-comfortable advantage reduced after finishing tenth at Miami and fifth at CTMP.
The #11 Vision 1 Motorsports Dallara has steadily closed the gap and now sits only 185 points behind entering the endurance race. Grow Racing Team remains firmly in contention as well, occupying third place and trailing the championship lead by 215 points.
The class will feature several notable lineup changes. Flight Level Racing is expanding its program by adding a second entry, the #767 Dallara P217, which will feature series newcomer Grant J Erlinder. Gowin Racing is also expected to return its #81 Dallara to competition, although the team has not yet announced its driver lineup.
Not all recent LMP2 news has been positive. Track Limits Simracing has withdrawn its #420 Dallara from the championship, reducing the size of the class while continuing ongoing paddock discussions surrounding the series' clean racing and penalty regulations.
GT PRO Leaders Face Growing Ferrari Challenge
Despite holding a commanding championship advantage, Blocco Motore Simsport cannot afford complacency in GT PRO. The #183 Aston Martin continues to lead the standings by 245 points over the #68 TwoLemmaTree Racing McLaren and by 280 points over defending champions Sim City Racing and their #71 Porsche.
The hottest team in the category, however, has been Gowin Racing. The #18 Ferrari has won consecutive races at VIR and Miami, vaulting itself into fourth place in the standings and establishing Ferrari as a growing threat near the front of the field.
Watkins Glen has historically rewarded consistency in GT PRO. Last year's race was won by the #917 PULSAR eSports Team McLaren, while Fischer Motorsport captured victory during the 2024 visit with its Porsche.
GT AM Storylines Extend Beyond the Championship Lead
GT AM arrives at Watkins Glen carrying perhaps the most dramatic off-track storyline of the season. SRN Motorsports has withdrawn its #75 Mercedes-AMG GT3 from the championship despite the entry sitting fourth in the overall GT AM standings and second in the Sprint Cup standings. The decision surprised many throughout the paddock, particularly given that the #75 remained ahead of its sister #74 entry in the Sprint Cup classification.
The championship lead remains in the hands of the #33 Wastegate Racing Mercedes, although the team arrives after a difficult CTMP weekend that included a heavy crash and an eighth-place finish. Gowin Racing's #19 Ferrari has quietly become one of the strongest performers in the class, recording three podium finishes and one victory across the last four races to reduce the championship deficit to 165 points.
Additional entries returning to competition should strengthen the field. Superstar Racing Team brings back its #4 McLaren after missing CTMP, while Blocco Motore Simsport's #283 Aston Martin returns for the first time since VIR in April.
Rain Could Influence Strategy and Endurance Cup Points
Weather may become a major factor over the six-hour race distance. Current forecasts indicate a 34 percent chance of rain, with the highest probability occurring around the midpoint of the event.
That timing is particularly significant because Endurance Cup points are awarded at the three-hour mark. Teams will need to balance outright pace with strategy flexibility should changing conditions arrive as the race approaches its midpoint.
Watkins Glen's flowing layout has historically rewarded drivers willing to attack through the high-speed sections, but even light rain can quickly alter braking zones, tire strategy calculations and traffic management between the GTP, LMP2, GT PRO and GT AM classes.
History Suggests Qualifying May Not Decide the Outcome
Recent Watkins Glen results show that starting position has not been a reliable predictor of victory. The last three GTP class winners all started outside the front row, including last year's victorious #51 Cadillac, which won from fourth on the grid.
The circuit's long race distance, multi-class traffic and strategic complexity have repeatedly allowed teams to recover from less-than-perfect qualifying performances. With six hours available to make gains, patience and execution often matter more than where a team begins the race.
