With the VSCA SportsCar Championship at its mid-season mark, the in-series Sprint Cup also has completed its first half at two races complete and two races remaining.
Laguna Seca opened things up in dramatic style in April. A wild race, with seemingly countless crashes and incidents and no less than five caution periods, it wasn’t until after an array of post-race penalties were sorted out, before race results were official and Torque Freak Racing’s No. 6 Porsche team was declared the official race winner. Kinetic Racing and their No. 67 Porsche team came up a strong second.
FASTR eSports and their No. 94 Lamborghini finished third at Laguna Seca, rounding out the podium.
Four weeks later, the series traveled to Mid-Ohio, for championship round four and the second of back-to-back Sprint Cup races.
And to everybody’s surprise and in a VSCA historic first occurrence, Torque Freak Racing’s No. 6 Porsche went on to win again, becoming the first ever team to win multiple races in the same VSCA SportsCar Championship season.
Incredibly enough, Kinetic Racing’s No. 67 Porsche, who were leading the race until a very late pit stop, wound up runners-up again, establishing the two teams solidly atop the GT3 point standings of the VSCA Sprint Cup after two races.
Torque Freak Racing holds the lead by 60 points over Kinetic Racing, followed by FASTR eSPorts and their No. 94 Lamborghini entry, who finished third at Laguna Seca and fourth at Mid-Ohio. Their margin is 130 points.
“We’ve seen that teams definitely take a more aggressive approach to these Sprint Cup races, I think.”, series director Kyle Birnie said.
“We’ve seen some improvement in the overall racing at Mid-Ohio, but regardless of that, the points battle definitely is very entertaining for our fans. I think nobody knows who will be out on top come September at the season finale at Road America.”
Other GT3 contenders like the No. 13 Mequiars Team FR13DA Sport Porsche, who has been one of the fastest GT3 cars on track in all four races so far, have struggled with consistency, but aren’t eliminated by any means, sitting in fourth place in the point standings, 210 points behind the leaders.
Sebring winners and one of the top BMW teams in VSCA, Twenty7 Motorsport will also be reckoned with before things are said and done as they currently hold P6 in the GT3 standings.
Rounding out the top-five in the GT3 class standings for the inaugural VSCA Sprint Cup, the No. 84 Porsche of Fischer Motorsport looks at a gap of 240 points to the championship lead.
The team had just recently made a change in its driver lineup, replacing Nelson Eberth with Jay Van Meppelen. The Canadian, together with team veteran driver Manuel Mayer finished P8 at Mid-Ohio, moving the No. 84 entry up three spots in the standings.
Before the VSCA Sprint Cup continues at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in July, the VSCA SportsCar Championship next travels to Watkins Glen on June 18th, for the 6 Hours of the Glen.
So, while the Sprint Cup championship battle is currently taking a break, an exciting points battle awaits fans and teams alike for the final two Sprint Cup races in July and August.
