Indianapolis Motor Speedway, famously known for hosting the Indy 500 and also known to host the Brickyard 400 NASCAR race for many years, will make its debut in hosting the VSCA SportsCar Championship on September 23rd, albeit on the road course this time, of course.
The vSPORTS Sports Car Challenge, presented by VR7UAL will mark the penultimate championship round of the 2023 season and the VSCA Sprint Cup season finale.
Hosting all the racing action will be the 14-turn and 2.439-mile (3.925 km) long road course of Indianapolis Motor Speedway that was first introduced to the public in its current layout in 2014.
Racing clockwise, the field will enter the long, famous front stretch of Indianapolis to start a lap, before heading into the infield for a series and at times quite technical combination of turns. In turn eleven and 14, the road course rejoins the oval to complete a lap at the track.
With the race scheduled for two hours and 40 minutes, there is going to be a lot of action cramped into this track.
Series championship leaders under pressure
In the overall championship standings, Indianapolis marks the second-to-last race of the 2023 season. The No. 7 BMW (LMDh class) of Grizzly Motorsports, the No. 19 Dallara (LMP2 class) of Trading Paints Racing and the No. 5 Mercedes of Screeching Moose Motorsports (GTD class) each lead their respective class and are under pressure to keep the competition at bay. Can the points leaders keep it together or perhaps even solidify their standing heading into the season finale at Road Atlanta in just two weeks?
VSCA Sprint Cup finale in the focal point at Indianapolis
While the overall series championship of course makes all the headlines, teams and drivers will also focus on the conclusion of the 2023 VSCA Sprint Cup at Indianapolis.
The in-series championship that includes the seven sprint races at Long Beach, Laguna Seca, CTMP, Detroit Belle Isle, Road America, VIR and Indianapolis will reach its conclusion on September 23rd, with the VSCA Sprint Cup champions crowned in all three classes.
In LMDh class competition, the No. 99 BMW of JO Motorsports leads by 49 points, winning two out of six Sprint Cup races so far - including the last race at VIR.
In LMP2 class, the No. 19 Trading Paints Racing Dallara holds a 56-point lead over winners of the last race at VIR, Albrecht Motorsports.
Champion Motorsports, and their No. 78 BMW M4 GT3 meanwhile look to win the VSCA Sprint Cup in GTD class competition. The team has yet to win, but has put forth a masterclass in consistency this year, finishing in the top-five four times in six Sprint Cup races. But closely behind, the No. 5 Mercedes of Screeching Moose Motorsports just waits for their chance to snap the title away at the last second, showing an even more impressive five top-fives in six Sprint Cup races this year.
