Rico Kollmeier and Thomas Martin together with their team put together the perfect strategy in Saturday’s vSPORTS Sports Car Challenge at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and pulled away late in the race to take the win by an impressive margin of over 20 seconds.
For Fischer Motorsport it was the first win in LMP2 class since July of last year, when the #14 Dallara won at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Needless to say Kollmeier and Martin were elated in victory lane:
“And to get a win on this of all tracks feels incredible. Thomas and I were asking us so many times ‘What was that? What is going on? What are they thinking?’ , because we had so many crazy moments in this race.”, said Kollmeier.
“I think I jumped off the cliff about 100 times in traffic. But it shows again, that our approach to focus on avoiding trouble works. It is starting to really pay off for us, which is great. We definitely keep that going going forward. I’ve also got to give credit to Thomas on absolutely flawless execution today. And we had the perfect strategy, too.”
Taking second place was the #813 HAC Racing Dallara with Richard Franke and Jack Stawowczyk.
Completing the podium finishers was the #86 GSE Racing eSports Dallara. The German team with drivers Christopher Seftel and Fabian Blitz got their best result since Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in May of this year, by taking third place.
Championship leader #19 Trading Paints Racing Dallara had a disappointing race, winding up 12th and ten laps down, which proved costly as the team out of Allentown, Pennsylvania lost the Sprint Cup championship in the last race.
Instead, #96 Albrecht Motorsports used a fifth-place finish - the team’s sixth top-five finish in seven Sprint Cup starts this year - to claim the 2023 VSCA Sprint Cup championship.
In the VSCA SportsCar Championship, one race remains. Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on October 7th will decide the series championship and the #19 Trading Paints Racing Dallara still leads by a comfortable 283 points over #96 Albrecht Motorsports but will look to avoid a repeat of what happened at Indianapolis.
