For JO Motorsports it is the first championship in VSCA competition. The two wins highlighting the team’s season came at VIR in August and Canadian Tire Motorsport in May.
The No. 99 BMW was represented in the top-five of all Sprint Cup events, with just one exception: A sixth-place finish at Detroit Belle Isle.
"Winning the Sprint Cup is a nice cap on a very strong year for our team.”, said team manager Eric Sibla.
“We caught a really tough break at Daytona, when our race was ended on lap one, but the guys stayed focused and we knew the Sprint Cup championship was still out there.”
Through an incredible performance drivers Jonathan Oshalim, Sheamus Power and Eric Sibla earned four podium finishes in seven starts, mastering the perfect combination of performance and consistency.
“The guys went out and did everything they could to bring it home. We faced some additional adversity in the Sprint Cup; from getting collected in a crash in the opening sprint race at Long Beach to an unlucky break at Road America running out of fuel during a caution.”, added Sibla.
At Road America, the No. 99 BMW was involved in drama surrounding a post-race penalty for towing under a full-course yellow due to running out of fuel which ultimately cost the team a potential third win on the 2023 season.
Still, the third place finish at Road America was enough for the team headquartered in Galt, California to take the championship lead in the VSCA Sprint Cup, that they never let go of again.
“To still win the Sprint Cup really shows the skill of Jonathan and Sheamus, and I could not be prouder of the guys for performing at such a high level all season long."
Winning the Sprint Cup round at VIR and finishing fifth at Indianapolis sealed the team’s first championship by 14 points over the No. 79 BMW of Champion Motorsports in another close championship battle.
