The 2025 VSCA SportsCar Championship reaches a historic milestone this weekend as Virginia International Raceway prepares to host the Virginia Sports Car Grand Prix on Saturday, April 26th, with the green flag set to wave at 1600 GMT. For the first time in series history, GT-only classes will headline the event, with GT PRO and GT AM battling exclusively over the course of 2 hours and 40 minutes on VIR’s Full Course layout.
Nestled in Alton, Virginia, the 3.270-mile, 17-turn circuit is affectionately known as “the little Nordschleife of North America,” a nod to its dramatic elevation changes, technical complexity, and old-school character. The GT machinery is expected to put on a thrilling display of speed and strategy, amplified by changing weather conditions: rain is expected during the morning warmup, with dry conditions forecast for the race start before a 65% chance of rain returns in the final hour.
Championship Implications
The Virginia Sports Car Grand Prix marks Round 5 of 11 in the VSCA SportsCar Championship and Round 3 of 6 in the Sprint Cup. In GT PRO, the story of the season so far has been the unmatched pace of the #71 Sim City Racing Porsche, which has swept all points-paying rounds in 2025. With a commanding 329-point lead over the #84 Fischer Motorsport Porsche, and 346 points ahead of the #183 Blocco Motore Simsport Porsche, the title battle is shaping into a race for second unless the #71 falters.
In the Sprint Cup standings, the #71 also leads by 30 points over the #77 Adrenaline Motorsports Lamborghini, but with VIR’s unique character and potential rain, surprises could shake up the leaderboard.
Over in GT AM, the #94 SWF Motorsports Porsche remains in the championship lead, but #83 Off in the Esses Racing McLaren — a winner at Daytona — is closing in, now just 51 points behind. The #34 Wastegate Racing Corvette holds third, 134 points back, and will carry added emotional weight this weekend as the team races in memory of Tom Hennes, the beloved driver of the #34 car who tragically passed away recently at age 56.
No. 74 Corvette, No. 80 Acura return to grid
Several fan favorites and returning entries will bolster the grid this weekend. After missing three consecutive rounds, SRN Motorsports’ #74 Corvette Z06 GT3.R is back in action. Also returning is the #80 Digital Chicane Acura NSX GT3 EVO 22, who were absent at Laguna Seca.
Meanwhile, series veterans Real Pixel Motorsport have withdrawn the #312 Acura following a disqualification in the last round and running into availability issues with their drivers. On the flip side, GT PRO entrants are back in full force after skipping Laguna Seca, eager to make their mark on a rare GT-only event.
Defending winners are also in focus. In GT PRO, last year’s race saw the #992 PULSAR eSports Porsche triumph from pole position. This time around, the team returns with the new #917 McLaren 720S GT3 EVO and will look to defend their VIR crown. In GT AM, there will be a new winner, as the #34 Mayer Simspeed Performance Mercedes, victorious in 2024, is not competing in 2025.
Weather Could Play Spoiler
With the potential for mixed conditions, tire strategy and driver adaptability may prove decisive. Teams will need to balance aggression with caution as the skies darken late in the race—a dramatic twist to an already significant round in the GT calendar.
